Rationale

Throughout my brochure I attempted to create a cohesive set of designs that all have a common theme – Calmness. ‘Escaping the city’ is something I enjoy doing to reflect and get away. Mount Victoria and the waterfront are places I try to go every week as they remind me of places around home – Mount Maunganui. Running around the Mount, enjoying the sights from on top, and swimming and relaxing at the beach are highlights of going back home. Conveying the feelings I get while experience each location was important to showing the atmosphere and vibe of the place. I also put a much greater importance on planning and process than I have before, and this helped me to understand and remember the steps taken to reach a final solution, which will help me in the future.

introduction, map and spare spread

I decided to create a comic spread for my spare spread. my introduction talks about wellington and introduces my locations.

spreads

creating links and ideas across spreads was important to keeping recurring themes through my booklet.

title ideas

My favourite ideas were:

Sanity in the City
Calmness for Dummies
How to: Calm

I chose sanity in the city because it has a ring to it that i like!

initial composition developments

after initial ideas, i began to develop my compositions. I came up with these ideas for critiquing.

grid structure and initial brochure concepts

After establishing my grid structure I created initial brochure concepts and took them to class for critiques. From here i found useful ideas that could help and inform my brochure right through to the finished product.

initial page layouts

i mocked up page layouts that i could follow throughout my brochure. From here i chose to work with predominantly 45 degree angles and straight lines.

initial digital concepts

creating initial digital concepts and attempting to portray feeling and atmosphere with a limited colour and imagery palette.

handmade collages

i made some initial manual collages to portray the atmosphere at each location. this included colour and imagery.

initial ideation

following my idea of 'escaping the city', i have created some initial ideas that i could use in my compositions.

To me, Mt Vic is all about the views, trees and nature, and sun.
The Waterfront is about the calming water, swimming, see breeze, sun and being with friends.
The Wind Turbine is about the views, nature, rolling hills, easy walk, friends, and the cool outlook.

I have created some imagery around these ideas.

colour palette

my initial colour palette ideas are:

Waterfront - light blue, red, yellow, dark blue
Mt Vic - yellow, green, sky blue
Wind Turbine - green, red, brown

from here I have decided to have only one major colour for each location. My final colour choices are:

Waterfront - light blue
Mt Vic - yellow
Wind Turbine - green

experiencing locations

experiencing the locations was important in not just getting imagery to work with, but feeling the mood, and feel of the spot. While Mount Vic and the Waterfront are places I regularly go, the Brooklyn Wind Turbine is much further away, so I needed to visit again just to have the experience fresh in my mind.

Adventuring

Mt. Vic takes me into a world of my own.

It reminds me of going up Mt. Maunganui

Initial Ideas

My initial ideas are all about escaping the city - finding ways to feel at home. Being from sunny Tauranga, places like Oriental Bay and Mount Victoria remind me of the serenity of home. Finding a quiet spot can be hard amongst the busyness of Wellington.
